Lady Howard of Okehampton Castle is a historical mystery wrapped in a blanket of folklore. Ghost stories describe her riding a carriage made of the bones of the four husbands she supposedly murdered, driven by a headless horseman and accompanied by a black dog. It’s said that her carriage rides to the castle mound every night where Lady Howard must pick each individual blade of grass and keep doing so every night until the mound is bare as punishment for killing her husbands. Ballads have been sung about her and many claim to have witnessed the carriage on the castle grounds.
Other reports, however, state that Lady Howard’s tale may be one riddled with misogyny and she was simply a wealthy woman who outlived four husbands (one of whom she was reportedly sold to at the age of 12) and who refused to bow to the whims of men.
While we have no firm evidence of either tale, since the opening of the Rift, her carriage has been spotted with its headless rider. Whether the carriage is constructed of the bones of dead husbands will require some testing and further investigation at least. Needless to say, she certainly does travel in style.
