God of iron and fire, Ogun is a formidable Orisha of the Yoruba religion. He is a revered warrior and blacksmith, associated with metalwork. Appearing strong and muscled, Ogun is often seen with a palm frond, while carrying a machete in one hand and a blacksmith’s hammer in the other.
One old story claims that after attempting to seize the throne twice, he was sent into exile, highlighting his volatile nature. He demands respect from those around him and will immediately cut down anyone who refuses to show it. Despite this anger, he is also a spirit you want on your side due to his dedication to removing obstacles in one’s path. So while he can be a grumpy sod, he’s also a worthwhile ally, as long as you are loyal and show respect.
Today, Ogun’s followers include not only warriors and metalworkers but also drivers and people who work with technology. It is customary to carry a piece of iron in reverence to Ogun to protect yourself from traffic accidents. Worshippers also wear chains of iron during festivals as a symbol of his required respect. He is associated with dogs and is often seen accompanied by a loyal hound.
