While it’s been debated as to whether her name may be Martha or Margaret, the Red Lady of Huntingdon College is an iconic American ghost, wrapped up in a thick layer of Southern Gothic atmosphere.
However, it’s been argued as to whether there are one or two different spirits that could be the Red Lady. The first dates back to the college’s early days before it moved to Montgomery, when the girls of one particular dorm all reported seeing a red glow from the corridors at night and even described a woman dressed in red and carrying a red parasol.
Many years later, after the college relocated and became the Women’s College of Alabama, a young student named either Martha or Margaret came to school and was said to favor the color red. She wore only red and decorated her room entirely in red too. She was reportedly incredibly sad and anyone who spent time with her also became increasingly depressed. Eventually, the girl took to wandering the halls at night and would arrive at other bedrooms and say nothing, simply stand there. Soon, she stopped attending meals and when other students went to check on her, they found her room emitting a strange red glow with the girl dead inside.
Whichever spirit the Red Lady now seen roaming the corridors may be, we know one thing for sure - red truly is her color. If you choose to approach her, we recommend you do so with kindness and do not approach if you’re feeling even the slightest bit morose.
