The goddess of witchcraft, magic, ghosts and necromancy, Hecate (pronounced hek-ah-tay) is a Greek icon. Often portrayed as a triple-bodied woman, she holds dominion over the Earth, the sky and the Underworld and goes as she pleases. Different sources claim that she was granted these rights by Zeus while others claim that it was her parents, the Titans Perses and Asteria who gave her these gifts. Either way, Hecate goes wherever she likes.
This queen of sorcery is frequently depicted as wielding dual flaming torches, which she used to guide Demeter in her search for Persephone after her abduction by Hades. Hecate seems to have formed a bond with Persephone after this episode and is known to lead her back to the Underworld for her yearly visit with Hades.
Not only is Hecate a powerful figure in the Greeks’ tales of times gone by, but she is also still revered today by witches, Pagans and Wiccans. Her three faces are thought to represent the triple goddess - maiden, mother and crone. This also means she’s always able to keep an eye on you so you better watch your step, especially with a powerful goddess who can go wherever she pleases.
