Also known as “The Whistler”, El Silbón is a frightening figure hailing from South America. The story goes that in the mid 19th Century, the spoiled El Silbón killed his father after he failed to capture any deer for dinner. He then gave his mother some of his father’s meat to cook and when he was caught out, he was strapped to a post and whipped as punishment. His father’s remains were then put into a sack and strapped to his back and El Silbón was forced to carry his father’s body for the rest of time.
Now, the Whistler hunts down others. He lets out a whistle and if you hear it, death is coming. You can recognize him not only by the bag of bones he carries but also by his alarming height, thin frame and the broad hat he wears.
His iconic whistle follows the musical notes C, D, E, F, G, A, and B. Supposedly you can tell how far away he is depending on the volume of the whistle, but probably not in the way you’d think. A loud whistle means El Silbón is far away while a quieter one suggests he is close by. This is a clever trick to attempt to outsmart his prey so make sure you are listening intently and put your headphones away. Now is not the time to listen to a podcast as your ears are your greatest ally when it comes to El Silbón.
