Ruled by Hades and his queen Persephone, the Underworld is where all souls are destined to go after death. Once you’ve paid your fee to Charon, you will travel on his skiff across the River Styx, or one of the other rivers Acheron, Cocytus, Phlegethon, or Lethe, depending on which shore you find yourself on, until you reach the gates of Hades. Guarded by Hades’ faithful three-headed dog Cerberus, these gates are impenetrable to the living. Only the dead may pass through. The living must not enter. Ever.
Your journey to the Underworld is a one-way trip; no one is permitted to leave. Those who try will face the wrath of Hades or the fangs of Cerberus, both equally terrifying.
The Underworld is divided into three regions: Tartarus, the Asphodel Meadows, and Elysium. Tartarus is a deep prison where Zeus cast the Titans. The Asphodel Meadows is the resting place for most souls, a realm of neither joy nor sorrow. Elysium, sometimes called the Elysian Fields, is reserved for the greatest of souls. Upon arrival, you will be judged by three rulers, Minos, Rhadamanthus, and Aeacus. It would be wise to have something good to share with them, or you risk ending up in the darkest realm, spending eternity with some very angry Titans.
