Lord of the Underworld, Hades (hay-dees) is not a god to be taken lightly. God of the dead, he is charged with keeping the Underworld (also sometimes referred to as “Hades”) in check and ensuring its inhabitants stay there. Eldest brother of Zeus and child of Cronus and Rhea, he was swallowed by his father and joined the charge against Cronus and the other Titans once he had been regurgitated. A rather unpleasant start to his immortal existence, if you ask us.
While he is considered a mostly level-headed ruler, he does not take kindly to anyone trying to leave the Underworld and this is what often prompts his rages. He is the owner and guardian of Cerebus, who diligently guards the entrance to the Underworld, devouring any escaped souls for his master.
Hades rules with his wife Persephone by his side for part of the year. Hades had originally abducted Persephone because he knew her mother Demeter would never agree to their marriage. Of course, Demeter did indeed try to reclaim her daughter. However, as Persephone had eaten a pomegranate seed, she is now destined to spend part of the year with Hades in the underworld, where they now rule as King and Queen.
