While “lechuza” may be the Spanish term for a simple barn owl, the concept of La Lechuza is much more terrifying. A witch who can transform into a giant owl is known across Mexico and parts of Texas for tormenting the locals. She swoops down and grabs people with her monstrous talons, before carrying them off to drink their blood in her lair. That’s not her only method of hunting though, she has been known to mimic the cry of a baby, luring people to her lair, before she strikes and drinks them dry. Her cry is an omen of death, feared by all who hear it.
In eyewitness accounts, she generally appears as an incredibly large black or white owl. However, we have heard multiple reports that she keeps her human head, shapeshifting into a terrifying creature with the body of an owl and the head of an old woman.
Some stories claim that Lechuza was once a woman whose child was killed and she is seeking revenge for this horrible crime. She is known to target two kinds of victims in particular - children, who are easily picked up by a freakishly large owl, and drunks, who probably don’t put up much of a fight either.
