Like a certain 1980s cult movie star, Bloody Mary only has power if you say her name three times. In contemporary rituals, participants stand before a mirror and call her name thrice (although some have needed to call her as many as thirteen times). She will then appear to you and either predict your death, scream in your face, or, in truly extreme circumstances, kill you. She has also been known to scratch people’s eyes out, drink their blood, and steal the occasional soul. It’s abundantly clear that Bloody Mary isn’t exactly thrilled about being yanked from her mirror realm. Yet, despite the obvious risks (and her less-than-welcoming attitude), people just can’t resist giving it a go anyway.

In the 1800s, the act of catoptromancy was connected to Bloody Mary. The ritual involved a young woman walking backwards up a flight of stairs, carrying a candle, before she sits before a mirror and asks to see the face of her future husband. For the lucky, they’d see their heart’s desire. For the unlucky, they’d see Bloody Mary in the shape of a skull, an omen of death.

If you have decided that the thrill of summoning her is worthy of Bloody Mary’s wrath, you must stand before a mirror, preferably in a darkened room, lit only by the flame of a candle, and call her name three times. Many of our reports state that this is best performed as part of a group, and we recommend that due to the power of the group’s collective strength and the ability of someone in the group to call for emergency services once Mary has finished scratching your eyes out. You have been warned.
