With the wings, talons and head of an eagle and the body of a lion, the Griffin is both a fearsome and regal beast. These majestic creatures can be found in the Rhipaean mountains, where they guard a large hoard of gold. However, this stockpile of loot was often under attack from the one-eyed race of people, the Arismaspians. These looters would ride in on horseback, in search of the Griffin’s treasure and, as such, horses are considered the natural enemies of Griffins.
There have been several reports of Griffins laying eggs in sacred nests where they hid solid gold nuggets.Due to the ferocious nature of these beasts, raiding their nests for golden nuggets is not advised, especially when they have young to protect. Griffins are known to mate for life and coming between any of their family members may result in death.
As well as protecting hoards of gold, Griffins are also known for maintaining vigils over holy sites and are associated with the sun god, Apollo.
