If you are fortunate enough to die a "good death," meaning that you fought well in battle and were slain in glory, then it’s likely you’ll be selected by the Valkyries to join Odin in Valhalla. Here, you can drink the finest mead and feast on fresh boar that is slaughtered each day and regenerates each night (not much of a paradise for the boar, it would seem).
Valhalla is the greatest hall you’ve ever seen, roofed with the shields of the fallen and with spear shafts for rafters. The fallen warriors who come here after death are called einherjar, and it’s said that when Ragnarök comes, these warriors will march out of the hall's 540 doors and fight for Odin.
So, while it might seem like an endless party and celebration, you do have to earn your keep—and that is through battle. One might argue that Odin is gathering his greatest warriors here to build an army in case he needs one. But sure, let’s just pretend it’s all about rewarding his finest fighters. Of course, nothing more to it than that.
