If your house needs a clean, you’ll want to get on the good side of a Kikimora. This house spirit will help with washing, cleaning, and all manner of household chores, as long as she’s happy. She will also help with keeping your chickens, but if you anger her, you’ll have hell to pay. Recorded incidents of angry Kikimoras include smashing plates and whistling through the night. Those with depleted smoke alarms know that’s just downright unpleasant.
Appearing as a woman with animalistic features, she is often described as having a dog’s snout, goat or chicken legs, and horns. Some even have a beak instead of a snout. While this appearance may be alarming, Kikimoras are ultimately very helpful creatures. However, their swamp-dwelling siblings are not as nice. The swamp Kikimora is stooped, scruffy and enjoys frightening travelers. They have even been known to drown passersby and kidnap children.
If you find yourself with the more kindly household Kikimora, she’ll likely have set up home either in your basement or behind the stove. You’ll know she’s there by her mouse-like squeaks as she asks for food. Be sure to remember to feed your Kikimora or say goodbye to all your best dinner plates.
