Yomi, the land of the dead in Shinto religion, is where you are destined to go once you're dead, buried, and starting to decompose. This realm of darkness is ruled by Izanami, the goddess of creation, who was sent to Yomi after dying in childbirth and now presides over this gloomy place.
Yomi is neither a place to aspire to nor one to be utterly terrified of. It is simply an extension of the world we currently live in and the next step after death. Shrouded with darkness and shadow, it is not meant to be feared, but it's certainly not a visit anyone looks forward to.
Rumor has it there is an entrance to Yomi in our world, blocked off with a giant boulder by Izanagi, Izanami’s husband, after he tried to bring her back from the underworld. We strongly advise against disturbing this boulder, as a safe return from Yomi is never guaranteed.
