Recognized in several Native American tribes, the story of the Deer Woman is one of mystery and vengeance. In many indigenous communities, she is regarded as a fierce protector of women and children, known to seek bloody retribution against men who have harmed those under her care. For others, she remains an elusive figure, a spirit who comes and goes as she pleases.
Often appearing as a beautiful woman with the unmistakable hooves of a deer, she is a powerful nature spirit and one of the “Little People,” beings connected to other realms who are cautious around humans. Her presence is often seen as an omen of transformation, thanks to her shape-shifting abilities. She may appear in full human form or, at times, simply as a deer, blending seamlessly with the forest.
Other tales warn of her wrath: the Deer Woman has been known to lure men who have wronged her into the woods, where, upon realizing her deer hooves, they meet a grim fate, stomped to death by the vengeful spirit. But the Deer Woman is not always out for blood, she is also known to be a lover of dance. She often slips unnoticed into communal gatherings, joining in and dancing until the music fades, putting her hooves to a much more joyful use.
