The largest city in Europe in the 1800s, Victorian London is a time capsule of British industry and progress. However, it’s also the home of all manner of ghosts, demons, frightening creatures and horrid human beings.
At a time when scientists, doctors and engineers were making strides in the fields of medicine and industry, a veil of superstition and fear also blanketed the city. Penny dreadfuls were on the rise as too were novels and plays that put the supernatural at the forefront of the public eye.
The foggy, lamplit streets were believed to be abound with phantoms, vampires and killers. From Sweeney Todd to Spring Heeled Jack, there was plenty to be afraid of in Victorian London. Granted, there were also very human elements to fear too, like pickpockets, thieves and all kinds of unsavory individuals. While Queen Victoria was ruling over the empire with grace in her black mourning attire, the regular folk of the city had much to fear, be that at the hands of monsters or mortals.
