Standing in the Old Town district, outside City Hall, is a statue to the Iron Man of Prague - one of the city’s most famous ghosts. Hundreds of years ago, a knight named Jáchym Berka was betrothed to a young woman when he went off to war. When he returned, he heard tales that she had been unfaithful and let these unfounded rumors get the better of him.
Here, the stories differ. Some say that in a jealous rage, he killed his beloved and she cursed him to wander the earth until he found forgiveness. Another version states that he shunned his love and married another but the shame drove his spurned fiancé to kill herself. When he heard of this, he killed his new wife and then himself and became doomed for eternity. While both stories are hazy, the ending is always the same - the Iron Man must say he is sorry and hope that he is forgiven.
Now, once every hundred years, he gets his chance. It’s said that he roams Prague one night a century, seeking out a young woman to tell his story to and hope she offers him salvation. Reportedly, his next chance is Good Friday 2109 so he’s got a while to wait.
