Considered the dark elves of Norse tales, the Dökkálfar (DURK-ahl-fahr) are the complete opposite of their light counterparts, the Ljósálfar. They live deep underground, and their skin is incredibly dark. They have piercing pale eyes, the color of moonlight. Their skin is described as being sprinkled with luminescent pigmentation, giving them the appearance of having starlight scattered over their flesh rather like luminescent freckles.
Not only do they look different to their counterparts, but they behave differently too. However, some argue that this belief became more prominent as Christianity spread to Norse lands, with these two types of elves representing the idea of good versus evil. During this time, Dökkálfar were blamed for killing cattle, attacking humans, and even, believe it or not, tangling a person’s hair.
Since Dökkálfar have lived almost entirely underground before the opening of the Rift, we have little concrete evidence of their behavior and require further study of these creatures. So the usual engagement rules apply: don't make direct eye contact, don't turn your back on them, and don't try to reason with them.
