Amongst the Welsh mountains, specifically Snowdon and Cadair Idris, the Grey King waits. Brenin Llwyd, or The Monarch of the Mist as he is sometimes called, rules over the Welsh mountains and valleys. This solitary figure is made almost entirely of mist and covered in a gray cloak, meaning it’s incredibly difficult to see him until it’s almost too late.
Used as a cautionary tale to stop children from wandering too high into the hills and venturing onto dangerous mountainous terrain, Brenin Llwyd is said to steal children away and possibly even eat them. Sometimes associated with the folklore surrounding Cŵn Annwn, Wales’ own version of The Wild Hunt, some have described him as overseeing a Court of the Mist.
With the Welsh mountains being known for their beautifully misty atmosphere, Brenin Llwyd may be a difficult one to track down. If you do find him, remember that he is a king, and you will need to conform to proper etiquette when in the presence of royalty. So make sure you start practicing your bow.
