If you were to stroll through Victorian London in the mid-to-late 1800s, there was a looming threat lurking over your head. That threat was none other than Spring Heeled Jack. This jumping terror leapt from rooftop to rooftop before diving down to strike terror in the hearts of unsuspecting Londoners.

Several eyewitnesses describe him as wearing a skintight bodysuit, a flowing cape, and brandishing sharp claws. Some reports were even more devilish and stated he had glowing red eyes and could even breathe fire. We suspect that salacious newspapers and penny dreadfuls may have had a part to play in the fire-breathing element, but what is not under scrutiny is his strange ability to jump incredibly high. He could leap fences and walls, jump between buildings, and some have even said he could leap onto roofs from street level.

Spring Heeled Jack often attacked women (although it was not unheard of for him to turn on men), and he would rip their clothes and tear at their skin with his claws. Many of the victims described his touch as cold and clammy, like that of a corpse. He never killed any of his targets, but he did cause physical harm and great distress. Sightings slowed in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and he was never caught. This nimble, light-footed menace has leapt beyond our reach one too many times, and we recommend aiming for his knees if attempting to strike back. Perhaps if he can’t jump, we can finally catch him.
