A dark and malevolent creature, the Irish Púca is a highly dangerous shapeshifter. Their trickster nature has led to tales of them leading humans astray, often to drown them in the lakes they make their homes. These lakes have been known as “pooka pools,” as the creature has at times been referred to as a “Pooka.” It has been debated whether the Púca truly tries to drown the victims of its games or simply causes them mischief.
Its shapeshifting abilities are both cunning and also the thing that gives them away. Its preferred forms are that of a horse or a dog, but it has also been known to take on the shape of a hare, a goat, or even a human. However, the key things to look out for are that it will be covered entirely with black fur, and its glowing gold eyes are impossible to disguise. They are prone to inviting humans to ride them, perhaps promising them a quicker trip home or to their desired destination; however, this is always a ruse to steal the person away. One method for countering this, or tricking the trickster, is to wear sharp spurs on your boots to ensure that you stay in control of the journey.
