Known locally as the Night Hag, the Nocnitsa appears as a malevolent spirit preying on those foolish enough to sleep within its territory, particularly targeting children, presumably due to their vulnerable nature. She manifests with the craggy looks of an extremely old, haggard woman and sits on sleepers' chests, inducing nightmares and leaving them breathless or without breath entirely.
So fearful are some communities that they have evolved protective rituals involving herbal charms and prayers to ward off her evil influence. Although many who indulge in prayer know there is little hard evidence of its effectiveness, it doesn't hurt to give it a go. This guide rarely relies on concrete proof of success, therefore, we suggest placing a knife under your pillow or scattering mustard seeds on your doorstep to distract her. Quite how this might work is anyone's guess, but it's worth a try.
