Slipping into your house at night while you sleep, the Nattmara (sometimes just called Mara) comes to drain your life. She is described as a young, gaunt woman dressed in a thin nightgown. With long dark hair, black fingernails like claws, and pale skin, she looks like something straight out of a nightmare.
Reports say she disintegrates into sand or fine dust to slip under doors or through cracks in windows, searching for a sleeping body. When she finds her target, she climbs onto their chest and squats, draining their energy and filling their mind with horrible images and dreams.
It’s said she rides a horse or cow into town and drinks the animal dry. Some stories claim she tangles a creature’s mane just by touching it with her long black nails. The same happens to any humans she touches, and she’s even been blamed for making tree branches twist and tangle as she rides by.
We recommend sleeping in shifts with companions when possible, or at the very least, leaving a light on to trick her into thinking you’re still awake.
