Eerie Worlds Expansion Preview - Lore

Greetings Champions and welcome to our first expansion preview!

We’ll be catching up with AvidEmma and taking a peek behind the curtain at the monsters lurking in the first round of upcoming expansions for Eerie Worlds coming your way very soon…

AvidEmma (Content Manager)

After being the news and newsletter guru on CUE (with occasional card back dabbling), Emma now works on selecting the monsters and Hordes for Eerie Worlds as well as writing the cards backs and news. If you ever had a weird question about vampires, witches and ghosts, Emma is the person to go to.

Greek

Tales of ancient Greek gods and monsters are many people’s first venture into the world of mythology so it felt like a great choice for one of our first expansions. But for Eerie, we are most interested in the spooky and the weird so we opted to dive in with some of the more dark and fearsome beasts.

Hades and Hecate were must haves. You can’t have a spooky game with Greek myths and not include the god of the underworld and the goddess of witchcraft. There are also recognizable figures like Medusa, Cerberus and the Cyclops. But the real fun is in the ones that you might not have heard of!

Hauntings

I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone if I said this is my favorite Horde. As a lover of ghost stories, this is one of the first Hordes I started planning, even if it wasn’t one of the first ones we made.

We looked far and wide for great tales and strange specters and I think there’s something for everyone here. As a Scot, I had to get into a story that genuinely frightens me with Bloody Mackenzie, which I don’t have the guts to visit myself. However, the one I’ve babbled the most about since has been Lady Howard, because I’m in awe of her bony carriage!

This Horde was the one that gave me the most satisfaction when writing the card backs because ghost stories are firmly in my wheelhouse. Now, if only I had a campfire and some colorful dust to throw into it…

Nordic

Approaching Scandinavian folklore and myth was really exciting and we decided early on that naming this Nordic rather than Norse opened up the opportunity to more folk tales, as well as just some gods and creatures you probably recognise (thanks to Marvel and God of War, I suppose).

This is an area of folklore I’m really interested in but challenged myself to find some creatures I’d never heard of or ones that were both spooky or strange. My new favorites are Fossegrim and the Huldra but it was still fun to read tales of Fenrir and Jörmungandr too!

There are a lot of tricksters in Nordic folklore so I think this is definitely a Horde of things that would trick me into following them into the woods and I’d be eaten shortly after.

West African

West African was a Horde that I knew very little about as I went into research mode but I am now totally in awe at the richness of the stories behind these Orishas and creatures. Anansi was a figure I was familiar with from pop culture so he was my first choice but building the Horde around him was incredibly interesting.

And when it comes to the Orishas, there are such amazing stories behind some of these figures and getting to learn more about them was incredibly exciting. Shango is one I’d never heard of but who is quickly becoming a go-to card for me and it was great to tell some of his story on the card back. This has quickly become one of my favorite Hordes and while I was convinced I was a Zerrofel girly at heart, I think I've become a loyal Rivin player in practice!

When can you expect to see these new hordes?

You’ll be able to get your hands on the all new cards on the 27th of September and we can’t wait to see how you’ll get on. Be sure to read through the lore behind your chosen Horde, try out some different gameplay styles, and most importantly, send your feedback our way!

See you on the battlefield!
